The Sony MXD-D40 is a highly regarded combination MiniDisc recorder and CD player designed for both serious MiniDisc recording and everyday CD/MD playback. Its integrated CD and MiniDisc sections make it easy to digitally transfer CDs directly to MiniDisc without requiring a separate CD player.

High-Speed CD-to-MiniDisc Recording
One of the MXD-D40's standout features is its integrated CD-to-MiniDisc recording system. Insert a CD and a recordable MiniDisc and use CD-MD Synchro Recording to make a digital recording while maintaining the original track sequence.
High-Speed CD-MD Synchro Recording makes the process considerably faster. Sony specifies 4x recording speed in standard stereo and monaural modes and 2x speed in LP2 and LP4 modes.
When a compatible CD contains CD TEXT track names, the MXD-D40 can also transfer that information automatically to the MiniDisc during CD-MD Synchro Recording.
MDLP Long-Play Recording
The MXD-D40 supports Sony's MDLP recording system, giving you several recording options depending on the desired balance between recording time and sound quality:
- Stereo: Standard recording time
- LP2 Stereo: 2x normal recording time
- LP4 Stereo: 4x normal recording time
- Monaural: Approximately 2x standard stereo recording time
Sony specifically recommends standard Stereo or LP2 when sound quality is the priority.
On an 80-minute MiniDisc, this means LP2 can provide up to approximately 160 minutes and LP4 up to approximately 320 minutes of recording capacity.
Record from External Audio Sources
The MXD-D40 isn't limited to copying CDs. External sources can be recorded to MiniDisc using its analog RCA inputs or digital optical input.
This makes the deck useful for transferring audio from compatible equipment such as another CD player, DAT deck, receiver, or other analog or digital audio source.
The built-in sampling-rate converter converts compatible digital sources to the deck's 44.1 kHz recording rate, including 32 kHz and 48 kHz digital sources.
Advanced MiniDisc Editing
The MXD-D40 offers considerably more control than basic MiniDisc recorders. Recorded MDs can be edited directly on the deck with functions including:

Time Machine Recording helps prevent missing the beginning of a source while preparing to record. While the deck is in recording pause, it can store the most recent 6 seconds of audio in buffer memory. Starting Time Machine Recording begins with the audio already stored in that buffer.
MiniDisc Pitch Control
The MXD-D40 also provides unusually extensive control over MiniDisc playback speed. Pitch can be lowered by as many as 36 steps, while Fine Control allows playback-speed adjustment in 0.1% increments from -87.5% to 0.0%.
This can be useful for musicians, transcription, practice, or specialized playback applications.
PC-LINK Support
The MXD-D40 includes Sony's PC-LINK connection. With the optional Sony PCLK-MN10A PC connecting kit, the deck can interface with a compatible computer for selecting and playing MD tracks and performing various MiniDisc editing operations. The PC connecting kit is not included.
